this old house....

The builders are round today, doing bits and bobs of work around the house. The builder I use was recommended to me, and he seems very reliable, always turning up when he says, I trust him to be in the house on his own, and he always does a good job. However because of this trust I am willing to pay him whatever he quotes for any job. I wish there was a website I could go to where I could select my location, select a job from a drop down list and get an idea of how much a job should cost. I know I should get quotes from more builders, but it just goes to show, trust is one thing you can't put a financial value on.

I had a similar idea once, where contractors would submit there details (or a customer could submit the details) to a database via an easy web page type thing (anything from a name and phone number to a full blown picture set of their best jobs), then they'd be reviewable, like an ebay seller review. I even bougt a domain for it, www.home-improvers.net I think. I'd imagine it to be a cross between Moveable Type and Ebay, categorised posts on contractors sorted by skill and geography, rated by customer review. It pays for itself by advertising B&Q type brands. You could even do a tips section, 'How to plumb an outdoor tap' by Andy Jaffrey...

I'm just another great fan of your blog.
