Can't believe DIY Man doesn't have surge protection or something...

Seriously what can you do to protect something like a stereo? I would have thought there was some kind of big internal fuse to prevent this sort of thing.

Um, do what the man said. Surge protection, voltage filters and regulators and all that guff.

Buy a couple of surge protectors, plug them into your 4-way extension leads and then everything connected to the extension leads will be safe from that sort of thing. You can even buy a protector for your house phone. It may seem ridiculous to have to buy them but I'd rather pay 6.50GBP to prevent it from happening, than 200 GBP afterwards. It's the same with a burglar alarm - you *do* have an alarm, don't you? (Take care how you respond to that one online!)

I have steel reinforced doors, two 'Big Fierce Dogs', cctv, security guards, alarms with motion detectors and a big fence.
