NTL Broadband
I have ordered the 600k broadband package, installation is next week. Has anyone got it installed? I read somewhere they just plug you into the back of the set top box. Is that the process if you already have cable tv?
I was looking at the linksys Wireless router. I know nyada about such matters but am hoping if I have one of these plugged into the cable modem I can use my Wi-fi card anywhere in the house, any advice about such a set up would be nice.

I have the 600k service.
The setup you are suggesting sounds fine, you should be able to plug the router into the cable modem / set top box, have it pick up an IP address from NTL, give your laptop an IP address on the other side, and off you go!

Thanks Marty. I plug the router in and it picks up an IP from NTL that sounds easy. I give my laptop an IP on the other side....this is where you lost me, how do I give my laptop an IP on the other side? Do I get two IP addresses from NTL one for the router and one for the laptop? Or once the router has the NTL IP address can I call my laptop anything I want on my home network.
Sorry for the retarded questions, I'll maybe buy a penguin book of networking on the way home. ;-)

I found a nice tutorial. Looks like the IP can be assigned by DHCP. So I don't need an IP for each 'thing' that I want to put on the network.

Yeah, DHCP is what I meant..
basically the router picks up an IP address from NTL using DHCP from their servers.
Then you tell your laptop to pick up an IP address, and the router assigns an internal one to the laptop.
Inside the router it does some magic address translation to go from your internal network ip to the outside world.
Have a look at this NAT Explanation
