No Puddings

Just spent a few days in lovely Yorkshire with work, Bradford and Huddersfield...all these glamorous locations. Nothing of any interest from the travels, except the hotel where we were staying last night was the birth place of Rugby league, the initial meeting of the first players, who wanted to turn professional, was held in the bar of the hotel, and rugby league was formed.
Here's some interesting info about the beginnings of the hotel:
http://homepage.eircom.net/~lawedd/GEORGEHOTEL.htm
Can you believe that this hotel cost £6100 to build in 1849.

Wheelie Bin Thiefs

Imagine stealing a wheelie bin, 50 quid it cost me when I moved in and some scoundrel decides to lift it from the back alley today. Due to the fact I was brought up in Portadown, I borrowed another wheelie bin. I sneaked it in the back gate just now under cover of darkness and have 'rebranded' it shall we say. I'm a bit mental me!!

Financial Woes

You know when it's a hard month, 5 weeks instead of 4, car insurance (Northern Ireland style), car tax, MOT, plus wedding/honeymoon savings. You are cruising along expecting to scrape through...just!! Then your friendly angling club cashes your membership cheque which you sent in March.
With a two finger salute to my Scottish Presbyterian stock, it's time to break out the plastic and head for the nearest pub, and I have an excuse aswell, our friend Grace is in town for a few days and it would be a shame not to have a few beverages in the sunshine...I'm thirsty and there's a few pints of stout with my name on them.

A few links

One of the girls I work with moved here from Dublin, she said in passing that her friends thought Belfast was crap for going out. This is the exact opposite of the general feedback which I normally hear. I think I have found out why, she likes to wear trainers when she goes out, she likes live music and traditional pubs, and doesn't like the 'poser bars' (her words) like The Apartment and Bar Bacca.
I pointed her to a few sites which I was amazed she had never heard of, I suppose you assume people pick up on these things, so here they are:
Fastfude

Alternative Ulster

ATL Gig Guide
And apparently 'according to one of my colleagues' this is a nice bar with a sensible attitude to those who decide they would prefer not to worry about what footwear they decide to wear when out for a night.

Cerveza

Having a bit of a Mexican evening tonight. It's probably about as authentic as a chicken ball supper with peas onions and gravy is to China. I am sure Carrie would be ashamed of my interpretation of mexican cuisine inspired by El Paso of Tescos. But here's the authentic bit, Rebecca wanted me to get a soundtrack for the evening, my knowledge of Mexican music stops at the Gypsy Kings so I have got this radio station blasting out from Mexico City to accompany the evening. The are some rare tracks being played but it's a nice accompaniment to my Sol with a lime stuck in it and a big bowl of Doritos.

radio controlled clocks

I had no idea some of the public 'mechanical' clocks you see around Belfast are radio controlled from Rugby, and that the reason they show the wrong time is because, although the clock knows the right time, there is no drive mechanism to the hands to correct the time as it changes by an hour twice a year (if I understand this article correctly).
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/3629031.stm
MSF signal page.
I remember someone telling me that a clock that has stopped is much more accurate than one which is not, because it reads exactly the right time twice a day. Whereas most of our clocks and watches are not accurate at all....what a load of cobblers!!

I got blisters on the soles of my feet

Rebecca likes walking...on paths. I like walking a little bit of the beaten track. I had a day off today so decided to head for the Mournes on a solo ascent of Slieve Bernagh. Solo ascent is my little joke, the mountain is only 750m high, but I think it's the third highest peak in Northern Ireland behind Donard and Commedagh...I may be wrong however. I used to walk here a lot with my old boy when I was young, we used to climb in the Mournes every Sunday, I think we managed all the peaks, well all the decent ones anyway.It's a shame his fitness is not what it was, I'd love to have his companionship on these walks again.
These photos are a bit duff, I was using an old rattlebox of a camera, and the mist was pretty bad. I felt like a real intrepid explorer using the old map and compass when the mist closed in at the top of Bernagh.
Hopefully Stephen knows something about the geology of Bernagh, the Tors are very impressive, rocks the size of my house, must have been some serious 'geological activity' on the go up there.

Comment Spam

I love comments, best party of a blog IMHO. A few weeks ago I renamed my comments script which worked nicely for about 3 weeks. Over the weekend my site was hammered by a kiddie porn comments spammer, so action needed to be taken.
I am now running Jay Allen's MT Blacklist. It was recommended by Movable Type and is a breeze to install.

Magnolia

The only bloom open on a lovely Magnolia bush: (Click for a bigger image)

Easter was spent doing DIY, the back wall of the yard needed repointed, I didn't know how badly until I climbed up and started removing the moss between the decorative bricks that cap the wall. These bricks probably hadn't been repointed in 50 years, the moss was holding them together. I removed some moss and ended up being able to lift whole bricks out. This meant I had to learn how to repoint pretty quickly. My initial attempts last year were pretty untidy, but I soon got into the swing of things. The secret appears to be to slap it in to the gap and make a mess, then when you clean it up with acid and a wire brush at the end it looks pretty decent. The bannisters which I started stripping in November 2002 were never going to look good, a hundred years of gloopy gloss left far too many remnants in between the decoration on the spindles, so after a bit of sanding we painted them satin white, they look a hell of a lot better now. I wanted to rip them out and get new ones put in, but I am not allowed to replace anything unless it's beyond redemption.

The Soup Line

One time KLF bloke pulls off a blinder:

In May 1998, Bill Drummond made soup for a rabble of people in a house off Botanic Ave, Belfast. In January 2003 he made soup for a bunch of people in a house in Ewart Rd, Nottingham.

In June 2003, he took a map of the British Isles and drew a line across it, so that it cut through Belfast and Nottingham and called it The Soup Line. He then decided to make it known that anybody living on this line was welcome to invite him to their home to make soup for their family and close friends.

The Soup Line passes through Rosapenna, Carrigen and Inch Burnfoot in Donegall and Dungiven, Maghera, Belfast, Comber and Portavogie in Northern Ireland.

Between 30 April and 6 May 2004 he will be based in Belfast as part of the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, available every evening to travel to one home in each of the above listed towns.

He brings all his own ingredients and utensils, you provide the liquid refreshments and welcome.

If asked why? Bill Drummond is likely to answer, ‘Because it is a friendly thing to do.’

Gold Star

star.gifThe toaster man wins the gold star with some useful code to my problem in the post below, his reponse was:
After a LWP get...
my $parsed = $XS->XMLin($content);
my $xml = $parsed->{Details} || return;
my @results = ref $xml eq 'ARRAY' ? @$xml : ($xml);
Does that help?
Then you always have an array in @results.
This worked really beautifully, I have never seen this ($xml), I also love seeing that ? used I always use an if else, mainly because I could never get my head round that ?.
Anyway I really miss being able to look at code, I remember in Blackstar I used to have an index in my head of places where I had seen some of the good programmers (there was only a couple in those days ;-) ) do something, if I had a similar problem I could trawl through their code and reuse it. I can't do that here.
Thanks Marc, much appreciated.

Things I intend to do soon

I ordered some free tickets for the Music Live closing extravaganza with non other than Roni Size on the 3rd May.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/musiclive/events/6music.shtml
The ticket number is 08700 100 125 but if you phone it a different stoner in a Glasgow call centre tells you something different ranging from 'You don't need tickets just turn up' to 'there's a ticket lottery if you give me your details I'll enter you in it'..hopefully the tickets turn up.
10th,11th & 16th May, there is a One Giant Leap movie screening and live show in Belfast:

When Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman joined forces to create the project 1 Giant Leap, they embarked upon a global journey that included Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, India, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, America and Europe, equipped solely with a digital video camera, a laptop and a vision - to capture and weave together a unique fusion of sound, image and spoken word from some of the world's most happening musicians, authors, scientists and thinkers and to explore 'The Unity in the Diversity'.

Their treasure hunt brought many unexpected collaborations with such inspirations as Michael Stipe, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, Dennis Hopper, Brian Eno, Asha Bhosle, and Baaba Maal. The resulting double-Grammy nominated DVD consists of 11 short films - INSPIRATION, MONEY, FAITH, SEX, DEATH, CONFRONTATION, TIME, BLASPHEMY, UNITY, MASKS, HAPPY, and 30 behind the scenes movies. You might have found this site having seen 'The Making Of 1 Giant Leap' which has been broadcast globally by National Geographic Channel. Or perhaps you've seen them playing live with their 10 piece band and cinema screens.

Right now they are back in production in Africa, recording and collaborating in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal and last spotted in South Africa.

http://www.1giantleap.tv/php/summary.php?id=1.

Other exciting news from my world is that our honeymoon is now paid off after some extensive saving and ebay selling, now starting on the spending money.
The dump house next door, from the caravan episode is now up for sale, in need of extensive modernisation they say, in need of extensive demolition would be more apt.
There looks like some interesting work related travel on the cards soon, things are looking up.
Incidentally if you got a not an array_ref error for the following code, how would you check that $xmldoc was indeed what was expected before executing the loop?
I tried calling ref on @{$xmldoc->{Details} as my first attempt (hoping I could do a unless ref = something, but the badly formed xml came back as HASH aswell as the well formed xml, and I still got the error.

foreach my $yada (@{$xmldoc->{Details}}){
print "$yada->{ProductName}";
}

Hopefully through the wonders of the Interweb there will be a mail waiting for me with the answer when I wake up....Gold Star (real one) and full coverage in this here blog available to the winning answer.

WTF

Blackstars relaunch as http://www.sendit.com/ is getting plenty of coverage on the local blogs, but I'll add my tuppence worth, it's woeful! I can't believe that the people who I thought still worked there would allow such a site to be launched..perhaps the person I am thinking of no longer works there..or does he?
Scrolling new releases, daft popup smiling pictures, it looks like a joke.
There must be some scam brewing, maybe there is InvestNI money for Internet companies who are struggling, so they are deliberately making the site look duff, that must be it!!

Goldeneye

Feeling a little worse for wear after the goldeneye on the web awards last night.
The entertainment was provided by the Three Waiters they were without a doubt the best entertainment I have ever witnessed.
The project I work for got a Highly Commended award for the e-education sector.
