Ooops

Today's Newcastle 'Journal' has an absolute
corker.

Page 3 has a story about the increased use of ID
in the city clubs and bars, and they have used a
mock-up of an ID card, using the real-life
picture ID card of a real person, name of Melanie
Fletcher (apparently a member of staff at Blu
Bambu, the club featured in the article).

The details on the card have been altered by
someone who is probably even now weeping over his
or her desk, or emptying it.

Check out the pdf of the article.

Kinky Glacier

Yes. Next month, 32,000 sq ft of the Gurschen glacier in Switzerland will be swathed in a half-inch-thick PVC coat in an attempt to halt its continuing decline.

A Visitor

The cat that visits us daily. He only likes prawns according to Rebecca, so two bags are purchased per week purely for this scavenger. He once ate a whole box of King Prawns, but I shouldn't mind apparently because they were buy one het one free in Sainsburys.

Wot No Mural?

Wot no mural

Those of you who drive the Sydenham bypass regularly may have noticed that the big yellow mural at the bottom of Station Road, where the footbridge into the old airport is, has been painted over in recent weeks. Scaffolding has been erected and it looks like one of the 'next generation' murals will be painted on it.
Somebody with a big pair of balls climbed the scaffolding last night and has painted 'Wot No Mural?' complete with a picture of the wee man peering over the wall, in very large letters across the whole gable. :-)

Insurance

A lesson in insurance, I wanted to change my car. I was previously paying 424 a year for my car. I called my insurance company and they quoted me between 850-1000 for my new model, I didn't have the new car at this point, hence the wooly quote.
So recently at a wedding I met the manageress of a rival company, she told me to call and she would beat that, this I did and was quoted £627.
I jumped at it and paid the deposit. Today I phone my previous provider to get the remainder of my policy changed to the new car. They ask am I renewing with them next week when it runs out. I say no that I have agreed with the other provider, they proceed to offer better and better rates for me if I cancel the other policy. I refuse because the girl did me a favour, by the end of the conversation, I was quoted £530 with a 5% charge for paying ,monthly by direct debit compared to £627 plus 10%. I turned this down because of loyalty to the person I met, but I'll know what to do next year. I always phone at least 5 or 6 companies to get a deal but have never seen a price drop so quickly when they know you are leaving.

Roundabout Pumps

"Cavorting on a roundabout has always been fun for children. Now pure, clean borehole water can be pumped into water storage tanks while the playground roundabout equipment is in use. The Play-Pump is a specifically designed and patented playground roundabout that drives conventional borehole pumps, keeping costs and maintenance to an absolute minimum, while entertaining the children."

Honey Hunters

I watched the documentary about honey hunting on channel 4 last night, whilst the presenter was a little wet IMHO, powdering out of the chance to take part, even with extra safety ropes, it was an enjoyable show.
The Gurungs (locals) climb sheer rock faces to harvest the honeycomb. Huge fires at the base of the cliff are used to smoke the bees out. Then a few mentalists climb the ladders without safety ropes, and secure toggles through large sections of honeycomb which are then lowered to the base of the cliff.

http://make.oreilly.com/

My first issue of Make arrived at the weekend. It's great, this issue has plans for a Kite Photography rig. I highly recommend it. The timer uses some silly putty inside a brass tube within which a long piece of dowel is inserted. An elastic band is wrapped around one end of the dowel and as the elastic band unwraps, the friction of the silly putty against the inside of the tube causes a delay before the timer activates the camera button.
Only problem being I have never seen silly putty in the UK. So I shall have to experiment with play doh or plasticene if I can't track it down.
You can but it at Amazon:
